Synopsis: Set in a midwestern city notorious for its history of violent Viet Nam war protests, Penal Fires is a psychological mystery of murder, reconciliation, romance and revenge. John Hartway, paroled after ten years for war protest crimes, stumbles upon the tail end of a murder. Dismissing it as an isolated incident, he meets a mental patient who resembles the man Hartway saw murdered. A drive-by attempt on the second man's life leads Hartway to a lethal blond, a powerful rival, a deadly prison cult, and more murders. All the evidence points to the psychiatricinstitute run by his father, but Hartway must overcome fraud, corruption, deceitand the demons of his past to bring the culprits to justice.

About the Author: A veteran of the anti-war movement, William Fietzer lived in Madison during the Viet Nam War and its aftermath. Now a writer and editor of fiction and non-fiction, he resides with his family in Minneapolis. Penal Fires is his first novel.
