Item description from seller

A well-preserved example of the third iteration of Cook's Beijing guide, illustrated with three splendid maps, including a regional map and a skeleton plan of the city. This version replaced the edition published in 1913 and was issued a year after Yuan Shikai's abortive attempt to proclaim himself emperor. Its "historical sketch" ends on a hopeful note, describing Li Yuanhong's assumption of the presidency. Li's ouster shortly after the guide went to print marked Beijing's descent into warlordism. Octavo. With 3 folding maps, maps, illustrations, and advertisements in text. Original green cloth, spine and covers lettered in black, Cook's badge in black on front board, yellow advertisement endpapers. Light rubbing to cloth, short stub tear, contents clean: a near-fine copy.
