Geoffrey Knowles was born in Chester and educated at The Kings School. He was apprenticed to Boots the Chemists at their Chester branch for his pharmacy training. He was a member of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as a Rating and at the advent of the war was called up on 2nd September 1939 serving, at first, on an Aircraft Carrier and later, after gaining a commission, served on Motor Torpedo Boats until the end of the European war in 1945. He then served on Minesweepers in the Far East until his return in late 1946. On return to civilian life he opened his first pharmacy in Ellesmere Port and later acquired two more in Hoylake. In the many years that he followed his chosen profession he became involved in extra mural activities, serving on two National Health Service Authorities, re-opening the Cottage Hospital, was appointed as a Magistrate, and finally was invited to give his services to the Statutory Committee of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. In all this time he was able to indulge in his hobby of sailing as and when his other activities permitted.
