Print on Demand. This book offers a fresh look at The Pearl, an enigmatic and beautiful Middle English poem written in the late 14th century. Usually read as an elegy, the author argues that we can gain a better understanding of this masterpiece by viewing it as an extended debate. The author engages with the poem's language, imagery, and form to reveal how it explores the opposition between reason and faith, theodicy, and free will, and the nature of grace. In the wake of personal loss, the author seeks an understanding of God's will and the place of the individual within a divine plan, and explores the connection between suffering on earth and reward in heaven. This scholarly yet accessible book is an insightful read for any lover of Middle English poetry, and offers fresh insight into one of the most enduring themes in literature. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
