Print on Demand. This book explores the question of whether war is unavoidable for progress in society. The author, a pacifist, argues that war is a scourge on humanity and its costs far outweigh any benefits. War leads to immense physical suffering and mental anguish, as well as economic ruin. It stifles progress in the arts and sciences, and diverts resources that could be used to improve the lives of ordinary people. The author argues that a state of unbroken peace is both possible and desirable, and that we should strive to create a society in which conflict is resolved through nonviolent means. This book challenges the idea that war is necessary for human progress and offers a hopeful vision of a more peaceful future. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

- Political Theory and History
Peace and Progress shows how reducing misery and embracing science, industry, and inquiry can bring lasting well-being—without war.
This concise work argues that genuine happiness comes from peaceful progress, not victorious battles. It weighs the costs of war against the gains of peace and highlights how scientific and social advances have shaped human advancement.
In clear, accessible language, the book examines how society benefits when people focus on learning, invention, and cooperation rather than conflict. It challenges the idea that wars are necessary for progress and offers a provocative, balanced look at history, ethics, and policy.- Understand the connection between peace, prosperity, and moral progress
- Explore how science, industry, and culture contribute to better living
- Compare the short-term thrills of conflict with the long-term gains of harmony
- See arguments about the real costs of war and the enduring value of peaceful invention
Ideal for readers seeking a calm, evidence-based perspective on how societies flourish through peaceful means and continued inquiry.
