About this Item
Text: Carl Schuster & Edmund Carpenter Publisher: Abrams, Inc., New York, 1996, First Edition Hardcover with dustjacket, 23x29 cm, 314 Pages Condition: Very good Language: English In 'Patterns That Connect' we're invited along Carl Schuster's (1904-1969), archeological investigations into a set of patterns designed by ancient peoples to illustrate their ideas about kinship. They tattooed and painted such "statements" on their bodies and clothing, carved them onto their tools, game boards, ceramics, ceremonial objects and coins amongst others and took them on their nomadic journeys. Through broad comparative study, Schuster decodes this iconography, which lasted at least 10,000 years, crossing continents, and outliving the cultures that sheltered it. Having spent more than three decades gathering evidence for his study, Schuster delayed publication while he delved deeper and searched for more. This book, later published by his colleague Edmund Carpenter, distills his research to a single volume. Seller Inventory # ABE-1691589071064
