Item description from seller

The actual First Edition ( Number Line to 1), not the later edition with a different publisher. 64 color plates, 108 black-and-white illustrations. You can see the covers in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. There is a light bit of color fade just off the top edges. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The spine is not toned. There is a sliver of a wrinkle at the top edge of the spine. There are also two little thin creases below the rear covers top corner. There is a tiny indent on the front cover. The cover edges are in very nice shape, no rubbing. There's no rubbing at the cover corners either. The page edges are perfectly clean. The book is very solidly bound with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The interior the book is in very nice shape. The inside covers and end papers are a light blue. They are all in excellent condition, clean and free of wear. The pages are also exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. There is some light toning off the edges of the pages, common with the type of paper used in art books. I'm not finding any creasing on any of the pages. Nor are there any markings. And no attachments, and no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. There is a separate printed letter from Princeton University Press dated August 7, 2000 that begins 'Dear Reviewer.' You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It too is exceptionally clean, just a couple of tiny white spots on the brown part of the front. There are no tears anywhere on the jacket. There is a tiny scratch on the rear. The flaps look terrific. They're perfectly clean. They don't have any wear. The jacket is not priced or clipped. I will fit it with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket: 'In this survey of the origins and development of abstraction in twentieth-century painting, John Golding, himself a noted painter, teacher, and art historian specializing in the period, analyzes the ambitions and careers of seven major artists, each of whom 'had been inspired by the fact that he was on the path to some new, ultimate pictorial truth or certainty, to a visual absolute.' This book is based on the 1997 series of A. W. Mellon Lectures delivered by the author at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. With its wealth of illustrations and highly perceptive insights into the historical background and the individual personalities of the painters under discussion, it provides a scholarly yet accessible approach to an understanding of the content and meaning of abstract art at its best and most profound.'.…

Store description

Many of the books I will be selling can accurately be described as ranging from somewhat rare to very rare. In some cases there won't be another copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. There doesn't seem much point, for you or me, in offering something that so many others are already offering. Subject matter will range very widely, creating the possibility for people with very different interests to find something that excites them. As regards pricing, my primary goal is to sell the book. Most often I would expect my book to be the least expensive option on the Internet taking into account an appropriate comparison(what is the condition, is the dust jacket present, is the book signed, is it a first printing, etc.). More important than selling the book I want to make sure that you know, as much as is possible, exactly what you are getting. To that end, you'll notice that my descriptions of condition tend to be lengthy, and that there will always be photographs to help you draw your own conclusions. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about a given book. As regards international shipping, the first class or standard rates I charge are based on a package weight between 2 and 3 pounds. If the book is on the thin side there is a possibility that I can securely pack it up under 2 pounds in weight. If so, the shipping price will drop by around $11.00 or $12.00 to $26.00-27.00. Canada, which is less expensive drops to $18.00. You can contact me before purchasing a book for an estimate on the shipping cost. If you buy the book and it weighs in below 2 pounds you'll get a Reduced Shipping message and amount with the invoice and you'll see the lowered final cost before you make your payment.…
