Grid map. Page measures 26 1/2" x 36 1/2". This scarce grid map depicts part of the Upper East Side extending from 66th Street to 72nd Street, between 5th Avenue and 2nd Avenue. Buildings are numbered and at times, labeled, with paste-downs used to update the map as lots changed. Some notable sites on this map include Hunter College and the Park Avenue Armory. This particular map is from Volume Two of the "Atlas of the Borough of Manhattan, City of New York, Complete in Four Volumes" published in 1907 by E. Belcher Hyde and updated to 1923. The map was designed to assist fire insurance agents in determining the degree of hazard associated with a particular property and therefore show the size, shape and construction of dwellings, commercial buildings, and factories as well as fire walls locations of windows and doors, sprinkler systems, and types of roofs. The maps also indicate widths and names of streets, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. They show locations of water mains, giving their dimensions, and of fire alarm boxes and hydrants. These map were an unrivaled source of information about the structure and use of buildings in American Cities. Map is in good condition with some wear along the edges and centerfold. The E. Belcher Hyde Map Company (c. 1880 - 1920) was a Brooklyn based publishing company. Famous for its meticulous research and accuracy in surveying, it focused mainly on maps for the use of the fire insurance industry, which required detailed maps to assess risks and liabilities. The company produced atlases of Long Island and the greater New York City area annually based on surveys by Hyde employees. This is a beautiful example of their work.
