A hidden vault beneath Atlanta. A coin that opens more than doors. A city whose memory has been weaponized.
Archivist and private collections consultant Maya Ellison has built a career helping powerful families "curate" their legacies—restricting access, sealing boxes, and calling it preservation. When a terrified volunteer at the Atlanta Historical Society finds a strange coin and a note that says THE DRAWERS LIE. THE CITY REMEMBERS. CALL MAYA ELLISON, she's dragged into the one story she can't edit from a distance.
Moments after he calls her, the volunteer is attacked in the archives. The coin vanishes. And a symbol—spiral and eight-pointed star—begins appearing at the edges of "accidents" all over the city.
Teaming up with homicide detective Jack Mercer, infrastructure obsessive Theo King, and quiet architectural historian Adrian Malik, Maya follows a hidden map beneath Atlanta's streets: forgotten tunnels, service corridors, and a clandestine Custody Depository buried under historic Auburn Avenue. Above ground, a private security apparatus called Meridian Trust, led by the unnervingly calm Calvin, uses cameras, keys, and clean paperwork to make inconvenient people disappear and inconvenient facts never officially exist.
When Maya discovers a ledger that already lists her as "Opener", she realizes the real threat isn't a killer—it's a system. One that rewrites history with sealed files and quiet press releases, and plans to make her the designated breach when the story breaks.
To survive, they can't just expose the truth. They have to out-archive the people who own the records.
As Meridian moves its underground vaults like furniture and closes in on their little team, Maya and Jack race to catalog what they physically have before it can be seized, build a parallel archive through church basements, community couriers, and hostile journalists, and turn Meridian's own tools—ledgers, cameras, and the coin itself—into evidence against them.
The Parker Coin is a tense, atmospheric thriller about tunnels and ledgers, yes—but also about who gets to decide what a city remembers. Perfect for readers of intelligent conspiracy and literary crime fiction, it asks: If the official record will never tell the whole story, how do you keep one honest layer alive—and what does it cost to become the margin note that power can't erase?
