Print on Demand. This book explores the contentious yet compelling topic of labor problems and their potential solutions. Unveiling the history of the labor movement and its struggles, the author posits that the system of joint trade agreements, where employers and employees negotiate working conditions, offers a promising path towards mitigating industrial conflict. The author advocates for open shops that embrace both union and non-union workers, arguing against the closed shop systems that can lead to discrimination and stifle competition. The author's insights underscore the significance of fair contracts, mutual respect, and collaboration as vital elements in fostering a harmonious and prosperous work environment. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

- Political Theory and History
A practical look at the labor problem through a series of speeches and essays. This volume gathers talks on how capital and labor can reach fair, businesslike agreements and reduce costly disputes. It presents a clear, reasoned path toward peaceful industrial relations.
The collection argues for treating labor as a commodity in wage discussions and outlines a system of joint trade agreements. It contrasts consolidated capital with organized capital and discusses how clear rules, candor, and disciplined leadership can improve outcomes for workers, employers, and the public. The author speaks directly to both employers and organized labor, emphasizing honesty, responsibility, and the value of reasoned debate.
- Clear explanation of the system of joint trade agreements and when it works best
- Distinction between consolidated capital and organized capital, and why organization matters
- Discussion of open shop versus closed shop and what each means for workers and business
- Call for disciplined leadership, fair dealing, and constructive public policy to sustain economic peace
Ideal for readers interested in early 20th-century labor history, economic policy, and the practical questions surrounding capital and labor relations.
