Smritir Baranda (The Veranda of Memories) - a Bengali short story collection by Sujata Sengupta.
Smritir Baranda is a moving collection of six Bengali short stories by Sujata Sengupta. The stories-Father, Poribritto, Mapeler Rong, Baranda, Paharpurer Upokotha, and Sayahne-explore the many layers of memory, relationships, love, hurt, separation, and compassion. Throughout the collection, the characters return again and again to memories and emotions left unspoken. Standing on an old veranda, travelling through the hills, or carrying wounds from a distant past, they search for themselves, for one another, and for a sense of freedom within the complexities of life. Through themes of caste, religion, social divisions, Partition, family, loneliness, loss, and emotional conflict, the stories reveal the quiet yet profound truths of human experience.
At its heart, Smritir Baranda is a book about memory and humanity-about looking back at the past in order to understand the present. In Father, Manimoy's childhood experiences of caste and religion leave wounds that shape his lifelong struggle with faith and forgiveness. Through Ruchira and Manab's relationship, questions of inheritance, identity, and belonging emerge. Elsewhere in the collection, separation, unspoken love, lost loved ones, distant homelands, and the longing to reconnect come together in intimate portraits of ordinary lives.
Written in a gentle and sensitive style, these stories linger on the things people carry with them across years and distances: old wounds, unfinished relationships, moments of tenderness, and memories that refuse to disappear.
For readers who enjoy Bengali literature, family stories, reflective fiction, narratives shaped by the aftermath of Partition, and thoughtful explorations of human relationships, Smritir Baranda offers a warm, contemplative, and lasting reading experience. Smritir Baranda by Sujata Sengupta gathers six stories of memory, distance, and quiet reckoning-a childhood wound that becomes a lifelong reckoning with faith and forgiveness, autumns spent far from home, and an old veranda that keeps a family's silences long after the years have passed. A gentle, unhurried collection about what we carry, what we let go, and what remains.
