8vo (24 cm), X, 414 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (paper slightly toned). "Paper Palaces" explores the development of architectural treatises during the Renaissance, tracing the evolution of the genre from its roots in the medieval manuscript tradition to the printed books of the sixteenth century. Vaughan Hart analyzes the works of key figures such as Alberti, Serlio, and Palladio, examining how these authors utilized text, image, and architectural theory to influence the practice of building in Renaissance Europe. Through a close reading of these treatises, Hart demonstrates how they contributed to the emergence of the architect as a professional figure and helped establish architecture as a distinct discipline. "Paper Palaces" represents a significant contribution to the study of architectural history and Renaissance culture.
