Synopsis:

There are almost four million grandparent households that are raising their grandchildren. There are many more relative caregivers and adoptive parents integrating displaced children into their household. Papa & Punchanella is a story for children (and adults might find some wisdom in Papa) about Punchanella's emotional journey from displacement to adoption. It is seen through the eyes of the child who poses many questions that Papa does his best to answer as Punchanella moves through a sequence of emotions regarding being taken care of by other adults who are not her parents. This book is based on the actual emotional steps my former granddaughter but now daughter took to find a soft place to fall with love, security, and permanency.

About the Authors: Peter Shore is a homeschooling dad who has adopted three of his grandchildren. Although they all have special needs, he helps them along life's journey: he allows them to fail, applauds their successes, and helps them cope with the many emotions that come with growing up. Peter enjoys teaching and playing with his children, making them laugh all the time, tending to their needs, and offering them a safe, secure, and loving environment. Along with his wife, Sheila, he has raised them in an atmosphere where they can speak freely without fear, learn right from wrong, understand that they are important, and learn kindness to pass onto others.

Chip is a friend whose wife was Sophia's (the inspiration for the book) teacher from preschool to kindergarten. His artistic rendering of Punchanella was exactly how I envisioned her, disheveled but with a noticeable class and grace. He hits on all cylinders using emotionally expressive emojis to preface each chapter. Take note of the square-jawed policeman and studious caseworker as well as the warm and tender children's counselor. They are exquisitely and beautifully represented. I cannot thank Chip enough for his time, effort, and patience with me on this worthwhile and relevant project.
