About this Item
[30 p.]. 33 cm. 8 full-page colour illustrations. Numerous sepia drawings. Respined with burgundy cloth. Edges and corners worn. Hinges and centre section repaired internally. Ink inscription on a front endpaper. Small tear in title page at bottom of inner margin. Thumbing. Some bottom corners chipped. Some repairs to page bottoms. The colourful clown on these pages appears to be influenced by the toy clown invented in the 19th century by Albert Schoenhut, in turn modelled on George Washington Lafayette Fox's Humpty Dumpty, a popular play of the time period. The fact that the clown has a bad fall on one of the pages reinforces the Humpty Dumpty connection. This clown is no role model for little people; he hides meat to play a trick on the butcher, steps on a gout sufferer's toe, and spreads butter on the ground to make people slide. The reader is glad when an elephant slips in the butter and flattens the foolish trickster!. Seller Inventory # 124063
