About this Item

In original matching blindstamped brown cloth with gilt lettered spines and front cover decorations. First editions, quarto, Text volume: xv, 492 pp.; Plate Volume: 113 beautifully executed lithographic plates (some double page) each with a descriptive text page. *** Condition: Light shelfwear and rubbing to extremities of both volumes, the text volume has a tear in the middle of the spine near the top. The hinges of both volumes are intact though starting to weaken; bindings still tight. Each volume is clean, unmarked and essentially fox-free. A small semi-circular dampstain affects the lower right corner of the last couple plates in the Plate volume, but is limited to the blank margin. Overall, an attractive set in very good condition. *** James Hall (1811-1898) was one of the most influential American geologists of the 19th century. For over 50 years, he dominated the fields of stratigraphy and paleontology in the US, amassing one of the largest bibliographies of any American scientist. His monumental 14 volume "Palaeontology of New York" was a taxonomic compilation that attracted international attention to the rich Paleozoic fossil record of New York state. His earlier fallout with Ebenezer Emmons Sr. over the latter's Taconic System, which Emmons dated using a "primordial" trilobite fauna, is legendary. These volumes represent an important contribution to the geology of New York and contain some of the finest paleontological illustrations produced during the 19th century in the U. S.
