A forgotten maritime incident. A trail of secrets across the Pacific. And a discovery that some crises are not what they seem.
New Zealand intelligence analyst Sarah Keegan is used to finding meaning in fragments. But when a series of apparently unrelated events begins pointing towards a decades-old mystery in the Marlborough Sounds, the pattern refuses to make sense.
Journalist Jacob Story is following a different trail. Former Royal New Zealand Navy warrant officer Bill Rathburne knows the waters where the mystery began better than almost anyone. And Bill’s wife, Jesse, a former Army intelligence major, thought that part of her life was long behind her.
She was wrong.
What connects them reaches far beyond New Zealand, through Vanuatu, Australia and Singapore, and into the buried history of an experiment whose consequences were never fully understood.
As old secrets surface and new threats emerge, Sarah begins to realise the real danger may not be an enemy hiding in the shadows. It may be something far harder to fight: the ability to manipulate what people believe is happening, then allow governments, institutions and ordinary people to react exactly as expected.
What looks like chaos may not be chaos at all.
The Pacific Signal is a fast-moving international thriller of intelligence, maritime mystery, friendship and deception, set across New Zealand and the wider Pacific.
Some crises do not need to be controlled.
Only the response does.
