Go beyond basic flight modes and learn how to develop with a modern UAV flight stack.
Flight controllers are at the heart of modern autonomous drones, coordinating sensors, control algorithms, navigation, and vehicle behavior. Understanding the software and development environment behind the flight controller is essential for anyone serious about building advanced UAV systems.
PX4 Drone Development provides a practical introduction to developing autonomous UAV applications around the PX4 ecosystem. From flight-controller fundamentals and configuration to simulation, autonomous missions, and companion-computer integration, this book explores the major concepts involved in PX4-based drone development.
You will learn how the flight stack fits into a complete UAV architecture and how developers can safely experiment with autonomous behaviors using simulation before moving toward physical hardware.
Inside, you'll learn how to:
-
Understand PX4 architecture and the role of the flight stack
-
Work with flight controllers and UAV hardware
-
Install, configure, and prepare a PX4 development environment
-
Understand firmware, parameters, sensors, and calibration
-
Explore flight modes and autonomous flight concepts
-
Work with MAVLink and UAV communications
-
Configure and execute autonomous missions
-
Use ground-control tools during UAV development
-
Explore Software-in-the-Loop simulation
-
Work with Gazebo-based simulation workflows
-
Integrate companion computers with UAV systems
-
Connect PX4 with robotics frameworks such as ROS and ROS 2
-
Test autonomous behaviors in controlled environments
-
Troubleshoot common PX4 development issues
-
Build practical PX4-based UAV projects
This book is aimed at developers, robotics engineers, engineering students, drone enthusiasts, and technical professionals who want to move beyond basic drone operation and understand the development side of autonomous UAV systems.
You can use the concepts independently or alongside the other books in The Autonomous UAV Engineering Series to build a broader understanding of UAV engineering and programming.
Understand the flight stack. Develop the mission. Simulate the system. Build better UAVs.
