You completed your PMHNP program prescribing medication. Nobody taught you how to run the fifty-minute hour.
Psychiatric nurse practitioners are now delivering psychotherapy across full-practice-authority states, integrated primary care clinics, and telehealth platforms nationwide, yet most graduate programs devote only a few weeks to talk therapy technique. The gap between what you were trained to prescribe and what your patients actually need from the chair across from them is real, and it shows up every time a session runs long, a technique falls flat, or a patient's progress stalls without you knowing why.
This 2026 clinical guide closes that gap.
Written specifically for the PMHNP's dual-competency role, this reference walks the full arc of psychotherapy practice from the first diagnostic interview through termination, integrating three evidence-based traditions into a single coherent framework:
- Cognitive-behavioral technique for anxiety, depression, and behavioral activation
- Trauma-informed assessment and trauma-focused treatment modalities
- Psychodynamic formulation, transference, and defense-mechanism recognition
Inside, you will find structured differential-diagnosis tables, clinical decision points that map exactly when to choose one treatment path over another, and detailed case vignettes drawn from real practice patterns across outpatient, integrated care, and telehealth settings.
Every chapter includes a full-page clinical illustration, diagrams and flowcharts built specifically to clarify mechanism, sequence, and technique at a glance.
A companion video course, accessed through a QR code printed inside the back cover, extends the book with more than one hundred curated video lessons organized by chapter, so you can watch a technique demonstrated before trying it in session.
Whether you are building your very first therapy caseload or sharpening skills after years of prescribing alone, this guide gives you the structured, evidence-based foundation your training left out.
