The prospectus for the Hope Mining Company established on Colorado's "Gold Dirt Lode" five years after gold was first discovered there. The prospectus contains a description of the general yield of gold in the state of Colorado and relies on the previous productiveness of the Gold Dirt Lode as a selling point for Hope Gold Company shares. A series of testimonials regarding the productiveness of the properties owned by the Hope Gold Company follows, including letters from the current owners to Colorado's territorial secretary and governor attesting to the Gold Dirt Lode's previous productiveness and potential for future profit; from Colonel Dodge, the previous owner of those portions of the Gold Dirt Lode purchased by the Hope Mining Company; and from N.W. Brown, the owner of the smelting mill where Gold Dirt Lode ore was processed. Also included are a table of gold sales from the Gold Dirt Mine, the total monetary yield from mines in the Gold Dirt Lode, as well as a list of mining claims and other properties belonging to the Hope Mining Company, including claims in the Grand Island district, the Bald Mountain district, the Mountain House district, the Twin Lake district, the Tarryall district, and the Independent district. The topographic map included in the prospectus shows the Gold Dirt District as well as landmarks in Gilpin, Arapahoe, and Buffalo Counties, and also appears in Edward Bliss' A Brief History of the New Gold Regions of Colorado Territory (Wagner-Camp 397), published the same year, with Bliss being quoted on page nine of the present work. A diagram of the Gold Dirt Lode as well as an engraved plate showing the detail of a Quartz Mill are also included. We were able to determine that J. H. Judd of New York, a vice president and trustee of the Hope Gold Mining Company, was also the president and a member of the board of trustees of the Black Hawk Gold Mining Company as well as the Bobcat Gold Mining Company with all three mines located in Gilpin County, Colorado (Worcester Daily Spy). As an officer and trustee of the Hope Gold Mining Company, Judd may have also been one of the original purchasers of the company's properties, potentially one of the "cash-rich eastern investors from New York and Boston" who purchased these mining properties at very high prices, even though the mines were already played out and then known in Gilpin County for not turning a profit (Alers). Judd and other initial investors in the mine may have then created the present prospectus to entice additional investors to pay for shares in the mine to defray their costs and generate a profit. It is unknown whether Judd and the other investors in the mine were able to generate a profit from the Gold Dirt Lode or from their other properties in Gilpin County, Colorado. Exceptionally uncommon in the market, with no copies in Rare Book Hub since Ernest Wessen offered a copy in 1954. Not in Wynar, Lingenfelter, or Wilcox. Brian Alers, "Legacy of Mining in Colorado: The Independent District" in The Mountain Ear, February 25, 2023. Worcester Daily Spy, May 7, 1864. Original tan printed wrappers. Wrappers lightly dust soiled, old vertical fold and two library stamps on wrapper at front edge. Small closed tear and fold to front corner of wrapper with moderate wear to the spine. Contemporary ownership on rear wrapper. Internally, a small library stamp to titlepage, otherwise clean and bright. Housed in a modern quarter morocco and marbled paper folder with gilt spine and two raised bands. Overall, very good.
