Item description from seller

An uncommon broadside proclamation by Woodrow Wilson of the enactment of a law by Congress requiring "that all male persons between the ages of twenty-one and thirty" register for military service. The Selective Service Act, as the law was known, went into effect on the eighteenth of May, 1917 and established the Selective Service System, which oversaw the compulsory conscription of nearly three million American men for service during World War I. The proclamation then gives "notice that the time and place of such registration shall be between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. on the fifth day of June, 1917.in the precinct wherein they have their permanent homes." Wilson's proclamation continues by encouraging the people of the United States to have a common purpose: "It is not an army that we must shape and train for war; it is a nation. To this end our people must draw close in one compact front against a common foe.It is in no sense a conscription of the unwilling; it is, rather, selection from a nation which has volunteered in mass." The present broadside proclamation is difficult to obtain; there are no copies of this proclamation in the marketplace, and OCLC locates only one copy, at the Tennessee State Library & Archives. OCLC 998056066. Old folds, with three tack holes along the upper and lower margins, and a single tack hole in each of the side margins. Lightly toned, but otherwise clean; a very good copy.…
