Most remembered for his book The Little Prince (1943). Obsessed with the world of aviation, Saint-Exupéry was part of the first airmail services in the world, becoming one of the pioneers of the early years of airplanes. He worked for the French Aeropostale society, both in Europe and the African colonies. During this time, he wrote various stories and also the novels The Aviator (1926) and Southern Mail (1928). Saint-Exupéry's work is clearly autobiographical in origin, though peppered with fiction. His adventure novels were very successful throughout Europe. During his stay in Africa, he had an accident and got lost in the desert. Subsequently, that experience was transferred to The Little Prince, a story he wrote during his stay in New York at the beginning of World War II. In 1943, he rejoined the army and fought until July 31, 1944, when his plane disappeared off the coast of Marseille for unknown reasons. Parts of his plane were recovered in 1994, and in 2008 a German pilot admitted to having shot down Saint-Exupéry's aircraft.
