About this Item

Comparative study of various primitive and non-Christian religions from earliest times to the time of Egypt and Babylonia. A wide ranging study of religions including "an examination of the religious beliefs of the Oceanic, Central African, and Amazonian primitives. Their development among the later Indo-Asiatic and Totemic peoples, their interpretation by the Western-Asiatic and Caucasian Races of Neolithic culture, and their possible connection with the earliest religion of mankind." Includes some cross references to passages in the Bible. A rather monumental reasearch effort by the author, who inscribed and signed this copy in 1926 on the front blank flyleaf. A thick and quite heavy book that has had the binding reinforced with a neat job of rebacking of spine with a cloth-like material of light maroon color to blend in with the pebbled light maroon cloth covers and purple colored leather corners. The leather very worn at the corners. Hinges tape reinforced. Original patterned endpapers still present. Contents clean and the book is now serviceably very tight as a result of the restoration. Recent paper label on spine giving title and author. Small label of a former owner on front paste-down endpaper. First page of "prolog" with small tear at bottom blank margin not serious. One hundred and four plates, with illustrations and also examples of early writing in various scripts, are not paginated. Some of the plates are printed on both sides. Quarto, 600pp with Index and Appendixes. Bookseller Inventory # 2053
