The second American edition, following an 1834 New York edition published by Bliss, Wadsworth & Co., translated from the original French, of T.P. Thénot's Practical Perspective, for the Use of Students. Included are sixty-seven plates on thirty-seven leaves (plus an additional duplicate leaf in this copy), illustrating the principles outlined in the text. "Lessons in perspective primarily for the artist, for example: drawing buildings, roofs, arcades, and circular steps; determining shadows; determining reflections in water and reflection of objects in glasses or mirrors" - Schimmelman. "This English translation of a French work was one of the earliest for students on the subject of perspective published in this country; the first was by a British author, John Varley, and appeared around 1819. Apparently popular, Thenot's manual went through two editions and a number of printings" - Anderson. OCLC locates copies of this edition to fourteen institutions. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 53285. SCHIMMELMAN, AMERICAN IMPRINTS ON ART 554. ANDERSON, TEACHING AMERICA TO DRAW, p.7 (1834 edition). OCLC 13144027, 809032916, 851880458. Original tan cloth, front board lettered in gilt. Binding rubbed and stained, corners worn, some warping to front and rear boards and pastedowns, old shelf sticker to spine, toe of spine chipped. Somewhat crude early 20th-century repair to front and rear hinges, front free endpaper reinforced with later card stock. Stationer's label (Cotton & Levely, Boston) to front pastedown. Some occasional foxing to text, otherwise clean internally. Good only.
