Poor condition - sold as is. FOUR VOLUME COMPLETE SET. Ex-institutional copies. Hardcovers: H 21.25cm x L 13.75cm. Contemporary half-leather bindings - leather spines and marbled paper boards with leather corners. Boards detached; Vol. III with text block broken/separated at pages 194-195; other volumes' bindings have varying stress points; spine leather are all obtrusively abraded/chipped with title labels lacking; remnant white ink institutional mark on Vol. I spine with no similar surviving marks on other spines; boards are rubbed/faded/stained and worn at corners; each volume now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids in securing boards and enhancing the set's compromised shelf presence (set needs to re-stitched and re-backed). Volume I has Stamford Institution barrower and regulation sheets (latter dated 1907) on its front endpapers; Vols. II, III, and IV have ink inscriptions "Stamford Subscription Library . . ." on their respective front pastedowns; early leaves have badge-shaped Stamford blind-stamps. Ink ownership inscriptions "Giles E. Dawson | April 1930" at top rights of ffeps. Vol. III has old pencil writing on rear pastedown; probably other markings to be found upon a more careful perusal. Volume I includes "Essay on the Dramatick Writings of Massinger" by John Ferriar (pages lxxxvii-cxxvii). ***** Shakespeare scholar Dr. Giles Edwin Dawson (1903-1994) joined the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. as a reference librarian in 1932 and, after World War II service, was the Folger's curator of books and manuscripts from 1946 until his retirement in 1967. Dr. Dawson served on the faculty of Catholic University m 1935 to 1972 and taught at Howard University from 1975 to 1977.
