Hardcover: H 23.75cm x L 15.5cm. **** Contemporary dark brown cloth with some rubbing, light staining, and surface abrasions; slender losses at front joint ends with small surface chips along rear joint; spine head chipped; spine heel worn even with text block's bottom edge; spine's gilt lettering dulled/flaked but legible; front board's gilt stamped ship and wave vignette remains bright; board edges worn particularly at corners. Yellow endpapers; antiquarian ink signature "James McCallum" on front pastedown with associated impression onto opposing ffep; foxing throughout with some scattered light soiling; top corners of pages 121-122 and 251-252 creased from past fold-downs. Rear plates have additional toning and several no longer following their original fold lines which results in Plates VIII's fore-edge protruding past that of fore-edge with ensuing shallow wear. Binding is firm. Still an attractive copy. Now presented in a trimmed Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which enhances the book's shelf presence. Provenance from a multi-generational collection of books acquired from a Tupelo, Mississippi estate with the family having Pulaski, Tennessee roots. Thus the book's aforementioned ownership signature allows for a firm attribution to James M. McCallum (1806-1889), an early Giles County, Tennessee attorney, state legislator, and author. McCallum served as Clerk and Master of the Giles County Chancery Court from 1842-1861 thereafter representing Giles County in the Tennessee General Assembly from 1861-1863 and representing Tennessee in the Confederate Congress from 1864-1865.
