Eastman Chase. Printed by N.Y. Photo-Gravure Co. on very thin tissue. Various sizes, (8 7/8 x 9 7/8 inches (largest) to 7 1/4 x 5 1/8 inches (smallest).Several of the plates have engraved "remarques" in the lower margin. All except "Essex in June" in excellent condition. Essex in June with wrinkling, anda loss at the upper left corner The book is rare, with OCLC locating only four copies (Harvard, Eastman House, Mass. Historical Society, and Historic New England, and an incomplete copy being offered in the Trade. These plates came from a disbound copy lacking five of the plates. OffThe plates present are Manchester, The Sphinx, The Singing Beach, The Avenue of Pines, Chebacco Lake, Lily Pond, The Episcopal Church, Essex Woods, Reef of Norman's Woe, Eagle Head Rock, The Public Library, Before the Storm, and Essex in June. An interesting and beautiful record of these North Shore communities as they existed before the turn of the 20th Century. Work by Jeannette M. Appleton was published in The Photographic Times of December 27, 1889, the Getty Museum owns two of her photographs, her work is mentioned in Volume 21 of Anthony's Photographic Bulletin, she is referenced as having been active between 1880 and 1905 in Rosenblum, A History of Women Photographers (1994), and the following is quoted from Volume 3 (circa 1891-92) of The American Amateur Photographer "It is manifestly impossible to mention all the pictures in the exhibition; all that we can hope to do is to call attention to a few of the more meritorious exhibits, among which those of Mrs. Jeannette M. Appleton easily take the first place for artistic excellence.
