A nice still rather fresh looking copy of this limited edition printing. Beautifully illustrated with starkly dramatic black and white engraved plates, tipped in. Many of the plates show sailing ships of the era of the great Spanish and English fleets in which this play is set. Interestingly this copy has a bookplate of original owner on front paste-down endpaper with design of one of these old sailing ships. The illustration on the bookplate looking remarkably similar to some of the illustrations in the book itself, but the bookplate design isn't signed by artist. This book comes with the original slipcase, which along with book itself, shows the limitation. On the slipcase this limitation statement with number of this copy being 218 is shown on the paper label on the cover. In the book itself the limitation is shown on a special page along with the signatures of Masefield and the artist. Binding tight and square, and the book generally very clean. The only imperfection worthy of special note being some creasing in top blank margins of a few of the pages, which was possibly caused by a marker placed in the book at one time. Not a glaring imperfection, and the general attractiveness of this copy compensates for that one problem plus a couple of smudges in the text. One smudge possibly result of slight bleed from the opposite illustration. Slipcase with some wear, especially at top edge where a small portion of the black paper covering is missing. Other corners and part of back seam of the slipcase with some wear as well. Title in gilt on spine of book still bright. Comes with a makeshift clear plastic covering for book and slipcase for continued preservation. Size: Large Quarto (small folio). Bookseller Inventory # 1485
