According to ER-20, more attention should be paid to achieving the required competence to acquire expertise in the field of medicine, so that upon successful completion of the programme in question, the student can provide expert advice on medicines to healthcare professionals on safe and effective use of drugs.
Under ER-20, guidelines for practical pharmacology clearly state that the animals should not be used to perform or demonstrate the experiments listed in syllabus. Thus, the concept of experimental pharmacology would be clear by using software programs such as Ex-Pharm or other software advised by the subject teachers involved.
ER-20 provides preclinical experiments, both in vivo, including study of effects of anesthetic, mydriatic, and miotic, analgesic, and pyrogen tests. In vitro, the curriculum includes study of effects of CNS-acting drugs and also need to carry out the effects of drugs on isolated organ (heart) and tissue (buccal cavity).
This manual contains 12 practical experiments on various topics such as narcotic analgesics, drugs that act on the CNS and heart, local anesthetics, mydriatic and miotic drugs, muscle relaxants, pyrogen test, etc.
