9.5 x 11.75" green album with faded gold framing on the front and "54" on the spine. Contains over 450 black and white and color photos, a bevy of newspaper clippings, service programs, and letters related to the Grace Methodist Church in Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania. More specifically, all of the photos and ephemera have to do with the church during the time period that Reverend Robert H. Cairns was the pastor there, starting from 1943 and ending in 1954. The album is completely filled with this material, although around 6 photos appear to be missing. Photographs measure between 2 x 1.5" and 7.75 x 9.5" and are held to the pages with corner tabs. Some of the photos are accompanied by handwritten annotations, but the majority feature Cairns and his wife, his brother, Paul Cairns, and church members. Church activities such as picnics, plays, and vacation bible school are included. The newspaper clippings pasted in alongside these photos often discuss the activities of the church and praise Reverend Cairns; it is made clear throughout the scrapbook that Cairns worked hard to bring the Grace Methodist Church out of doubt. However, the album is not only about the church. Towards the end of the scrapbook there are vacation photos to Ontario, Michigan, Mexico, New York City and various national parks in the western United States, including Yellowstone, Bryce Canyon, Yosemtie, etc. Some photos are of his brother during WWII in the South Pacific. There are also several letters that Cairns received offering condolences for the passing of his mother, Julia H. Cairns. Examples of letters: Letter from James H. Straughn to The Rev. Robert H. Cairns (April 7, 1944) Dear Brother Cairns: The enclosed letter is of course intended for your Church authorities but I am adding just a personal word to you. When you were here the other day I said that I felt you had come into this situation at a most opportune moment. I am still of that same conviction. It seems to me the Church is a bit timid in approaching this whole matter. It needs, and I am sure will respond to, courageous leadership. I believe you can swing this, in that the Church will follow you in your call. The problem at Natrona Heights has been there for years and to be able to work out this thing and to clear the Church in such a way that it will do what all other churches are supposed to do - carry their own burden and responsibility - will have a tremendous effect upon the morale of the entire organization. Some people may be difficult in this matter of money appeal but it is my observation that most people actually are not scared of it. If you care to stop in sometime early next week, I will be glad to see you. Sincerely yours, James H. Straughn Letter from PFE Paul Cairns to Rev. Robert Cairns (7 May 1944) Dear folks, I hope this finds you well and happy, as it probably does. Mother writes that she had a wonderful time with you and that you had a number of fine services. That's swell, Bob and I want to thank you for showing Mother so much fun. I'm in no condition to do that so it's rather up to you to make up for my absence. I know you'll keep in constant touch with her. She appreciates it so much. She mentioned in particular your candle-light services. We have a string quartet that sings each Sunday morning, we have a portable field organ, and plenty of hymnals so we get along O.K. We have 2 services on Sunday. To date, my ham players & I have participated in 19 shows all over the base. It's great fun. Betty told me that she and the kid are O.K. despite his loneliness. Love, Paul Letter from Uncle Billy to Robert & Paul Dear Robert & Paul What a tragedy to have your Mother taken so unexpectedly and what a mother she was so tender hearted so capable so generous in all her characteristics. The same loneliness comes over me as when I lost my dearly beloved--she and the College went hand in hand to make Adrian so charming for me. But since life and the weather are so replete with thei.
