Peritoneal Dialysis in Clinical Practice is a comprehensive professional reference for clinicians and advanced trainees who need a structured, patient-centered approach to home dialysis. From modality selection and catheter planning to membrane testing, prescription design, adequacy, infection management, mechanical troubleshooting, nutrition, psychosocial support, transplantation, and program quality, this text connects foundational science with practical clinical reasoning.
Designed for nephrology fellows, practicing nephrologists, dialysis nurses, advanced practice clinicians, renal pharmacists, dietitians, and experienced trainees, the book emphasizes goal-directed decision-making rather than isolated laboratory targets. It is structured for sequential study, bedside consultation, teaching rounds, and multidisciplinary review.
Inside, you will learn how to:
- Interpret peritoneal transport, dwell time, ultrafiltration, sodium removal, and residual kidney function in context.
- Build individualized CAPD, APD, and hybrid treatment approaches around patient goals, clinical needs, and treatment burden.
- Plan catheter access, break-in, urgent-start pathways, exit-site care, and systematic responses to flow problems and leaks.
- Recognize and manage peritonitis, exit-site and tunnel infections, mechanical complications, volume overload, and metabolic concerns.
- Strengthen patient training through aseptic technique, teach-back, return demonstration, competency validation, and retraining.
- Integrate nutrition, cardiovascular risk, frailty, special populations, psychosocial needs, transplantation, and supportive care into long-term management.
- Improve program safety through surveillance, root-cause analysis, quality improvement, remote monitoring, emergency planning, and patient-reported outcomes.
