Bell, Clive. PEACE AT ONCE, .the original edition published by the National Labour Press, Manchester & London, n.d. [1915], 56 pp., alas lacking original wrappers; VG with wear to outer leaf pulling away from staples; this pamphlet was published by Bell as pacifists took on the anti-war effort; IT WAS ORDERED SEIZED AND DESTROYED BY THE LORD MAYOR OF LONDON (in fact the British Museum copy was forwarded by the Public Prosecutor in 1916); Virginia Woolf wrote that Bell almost lost his income from his father as a result of this pamphlet which, had it happened, might have been the end of Bloomsbury; most likely the only copies that survived were in libraries of Bell and his Bloomsbury/pacifist friends; Bell wrote two articles in September, 1915 ( Suppression of a Pamphlet & Mr. Bell s Pamphlet ) arguing that Britons then enjoyed fewer rights than Germans who had expressed the same ideas in Germany; of course the Government s attitude toward any talk of peace was hardening throughout the War - witness Bertrand Russell s jailing in 1918; the number of copies of the original which have survived is unknown, but they are exceedingly rare, Laing A2, of course many libraries have later reprints or e-copies, but few have an original; missing in many major Bloomsbury collections; we last had a copy in 2008.…
