PCR: A Practical Approach provides a general introduction to PCR for researchers new to the area, followed by chapters detailing specific applications of the technique. It covers gene analysis at the level of restriction enzyme polymorphism, point mutation and sequence analysis. Methods for using different source materials - cloned DNA, genomic DNA, RNA, nucleic acid from archive material and PCR products themselves - are given.
The emphasis throughout is on the practical applications of the technique and detailed experimental protocols are included at all stages, backed up by advice on avoiding potential pitfalls. This volume provides a starting point for those new to PCR and will also serve as a useful reference for more experienced researchers in all areas of biological science.

Review
'this new addition to the very good Practical Approach' series is as good as any of them ... Like previous volumes in the series, this book contains a wealth of protocols for PCR and a list of suppliers of specialist items. This review recommends the book strongly to those new to PCR as well as to those who have been using this technique for some time.' D. Savva, Biologist, February 1992, Volume 39, Number 1
'The book can be used as an introduction for the novice researcher or as a useful reference manual for the more experienced.' Aslib Book Guide, vol. 57, no. 1, January 1992'
'this volume will be a valuable source of wisdom in many laboratories in the 1990s'Dr. Rhys T. Jaggar, University of Paisley, The Genetic Engineer & Biotechnologist, Volume 12, Issue No. 6, Nov/Dec 1992
'Even if you think you know all there is to know about this technique, you should buy this book. You will be pleasantly surprised by the helpful tips you can derive from it.'Trends in Genetics
'The Practical Approach series is well established as a reliable source of short technical reviews of important research topics. ...This is an excellent book in keeping with the tradition of the Practical Approach Series. It is highly recommended to those already in the field and to newcomers alike as a source of up to date information and techniques.'FEBS Letters
'an excellent solution in combining PCR protocols and theoretical background. ...The book is a valuable laboratory manual that is recommended for students and technical assistants who start with PCR and have some basic expericenc in molecular biological techniques.'Biotechnology Education
'Concise, well written and interesting, I would thoroughly recommend this text as a useful addition to the PCR library.'Soo Pickering, University of Cambridge, Trends in Biochemical Sciences, Volume 17, No. 5, May 1992
