Your bills arrive on the same date every month. Your income doesn't. One month a client pays late, another month two payments land the same week, and you're left doing mental math instead of running your business.
That's why so much traditional personal finance advice falls apart the moment your income becomes unpredictable. It was built for people with steady paychecks — not for freelancers, consultants, and self-employed business owners whose income changes from month to month.
If you've ever finished your best month in business and still wondered where the money went… if you've ever put off paying yourself because every dollar felt uncertain… if you've ever wished your income behaved more like a paycheck — this book was written for you.
THE PAYCHECK YOU GIVE YOURSELF is a practical money operating system built specifically for people living on irregular income. Instead of motivation, complicated budgets, or constant guesswork, you'll build a simple, repeatable structure that turns unpredictable client payments into an income you can actually plan your life around — protecting your business long before a slow month becomes a financial crisis.
Inside, you'll build:
- A Four-Account System that separates Operating, Tax, Reserve, and Profit — so every dollar already has a job before you spend it
- Your Financial Freedom Number — a real, calculated baseline instead of a vague feeling that you "should be doing better"
- A Reserve fund that gets you through slow months calmly, built gradually through a system instead of willpower
- A 5-Number Dashboard that replaces daily money anxiety with one fifteen-minute check-in a month
- A clear path to long-term wealth — even without an employer-sponsored retirement plan
- A full Solopreneur Toolkit — invoice templates, a client contract checklist, an insurance coverage checklist, and more — so the system isn't just theory, it's ready to use
This isn't another book telling you to hustle harder, earn more, or simply get better at budgeting. It's a practical framework for managing cash flow and making confident financial decisions in a business where income will probably never arrive on a predictable schedule.
Told through the real financial decisions of working solopreneurs — a designer covering a slow quarter, a photographer losing his biggest client overnight — this book gives you a system that tells you the truth about your money every month, whether business is booming or slow. Dedicated guidance for readers in the UK, Canada, and Australia is included throughout, alongside the primary U.S.-based examples.
Your income may always change. Your money system doesn't have to.

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
