Item description from seller

First impression of the first Folio Society edition. Translated from the Bengali by T. W. Clark & Turupada Mukherji. With lithographs by Janet Archer. The book was originally published in 1929, and in English translation in 1968. ***Very good in red patterned boards overlaid with a kind of hessian netting which has inevitably become snagged in places, mainly at the edges of the spine. The binding is otherwise unblemished. Top edge of text-block stained scarlet by the publisher. Internally near fine with no inscriptions. Pages clean. No foxing. Dark red endpapers. Spine tight. ***In a very good pink-brown card slipcase. The slipcase is just slightly marked and rubbed at the edges, but is in very good condition with no splits. ***230mm x 140mm. 273 pages. ***'"Pather Panchali" (Transl. "Song of the Little Road" is a 1929 novel written by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay and was later adapted into a 1955 film of the same name by Satyajit Ray. Considered to be one of the greatest literary works describing rural life, Pather Panchali deals with the life of the Roy family, both in their ancestral village in rural Bengal and later when they move to Varanasi in search of a better life, as well as the anguish and loss they face during their travels. An English translation by T.W. Clark and Tarapada Mukherji was published in 1968 by Indiana University Press as part of the UNESCO Collection of Representative Works.' (Wiki) ***First impression of the first Folio Society edition. An older, nicely produced Folio Society title, printed on quality cream paper. A beautifully produced book that would make a nice gift. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.…
