In recent years, considerable advances have been made in our knowledge and understanding of Parkinson's disease (PD). In particular, there has been an explosion of information regarding genetic contributions to the etiology of PD and an increased awareness of the incidence and importance of the non-motor features of the disease. In this second edition of Parkinson’s Disease, an august armada of authorities has once again assembled to address the ever-more challenging topic for which this book is named.

In 91 comprehensive chapters, this book covers the historical background, basic characteristics, epidemiological considerations, clinical features, current treatment approaches, and potential future therapeutic modalities of Parkinson’s disease. Specifically, the book addresses:

• Genetic aspects of PD and potential environmental contributions to the etiology of the disorder
• Neuroanatomical, neuropathological, neurophysiological and molecular pathophysiological aspects of PD
• The clinical features of PD, both classic motor features and the full array of non-motor features
• Treatment approaches to the disorder, including pharmacologic, surgical, and other modalities
• The economic and social impact of PD on patients, family, and society

Since the first edition, theories regarding the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of PD have also been refined, and new treatment modalities and advances have been implemented. Reflecting these changes, Parkinson’s Disease, Second Edition is the largest, most thorough, and most comprehensive text addressing this common neurodegenerative disorder.

Praise for the First Edition:

"...an invaluable reference outlining our current understanding of this disease. ... contains all the information that any student new to the field requires to develop a thorough understanding of PD. With chapters about everything from epidemiology, to theories of pathogenesis, and back to symptoms and treatment, this book covers the entire range of what we can know about a biological phenomenon, from the molecular, cellular and genetic levels, through to the whole human being and the entire human population. ... accessible to both seasoned veterans of Parkinson’s research, looking for the last information in an area outside their direct expertise, and novices, trying to grasp an understanding of the extent of our current knowledge of PD."
―Elissa M. Strome, Department of Experimental Medical Science, Lund University, Sweden, in the Journal of Chemical Neuroanatomy

"I would recommend it highly to those with a specialist’s interest in Parkinson’s disease and to more general neurologists who want an accessible, readable guide to diagnosing and treating this disease."
―New England Journal of Medicine

"... tightly constructed and well organized. It stands out as the most comprehensive volume available on this disorder."
―JAMA

"A new encyclopedic collection of clinical wisdom ... the largest and most comprehensive of several reference books that focus on this illness ... masterfully organized."
