Pakistan's borders are more than lines on a map. They are the product of empire, partition, war, competing territorial claims, strategic interests, ethnic identities, and decades of geopolitical tension.
Why have Pakistan's borders remained so difficult to define, defend, and stabilize?
Pakistan’s Impossible Borders explores the complicated history and geopolitics surrounding the country's frontiers with India, Afghanistan, Iran, and China, revealing how geography and history have combined to create some of South Asia's most consequential border disputes.
From the disputed legacy of partition and the Kashmir question to the long-running controversy surrounding the Durand Line, Pakistan's borders cannot be understood simply by looking at a modern political map. Behind every boundary lies a story of treaties, colonial decisions, wars, migration, nationalism, strategic calculations, and communities whose lives have been shaped by borders they did not create.
This book brings together history, geography, international relations, and strategic analysis to examine why Pakistan occupies such a pivotal position between South Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East, and China.
Whether you are interested in Pakistan's history, India-Pakistan relations, Afghanistan, Kashmir, international affairs, or the geopolitics of South Asia, Pakistan’s Impossible Borders offers a focused examination of the boundaries that continue to influence the region's politics and security.
Discover the history behind Pakistan's borders—and understand why those borders remain among the most consequential fault lines in modern Asia.
