First edition. 8vo. (iii)-vii, (i), 346, (4) pp, bound without the half title and advertisements. Contemporary marbled boards, rebacked to style in tan calf, gilt lettered black spine label, traces of old pencilled annotations to the endpapers. 10 engraved plates to the rear featuring 219 samples. Fairly even browning throughout with some foxing to the front and rear, very good overall. A surgeon by trade and identifier of the eponymous disease in "An Essay on the Shaking Palsy" (1817), he was also a keen amateur geologist and was a founder member of the Geological Society.
