Ex-library. Illustrated with photographs throughout. Original green cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. Bears stamps of the Mary Fletcher Hospital Training School Library. Pages and cover are wrinkled from historic dampstain. Book was well-used after library discarding, and contains pencil and ink notations on pastedowns and in text. Front hinge is weak and mesh is showing. All text and photos are readable. This is a history of nursing across culture and time. Ancient, medieval, and early modern forms of nursing are discussed in the first three chapters, and what follows is a treatment of the professionalization of nursing, beginning with Florence Nightingale and the Crimean War. Goodnow discusses the development of nursing in Great Britain, the first schools of nursing in the U.S., the Red Cross Society, nursing in American wars, and changing and broadening aims and ideas in nursing in the U.S. and internationally. The appendices contain: the work of scientists as related to nursing, the Waltham School, state registration for nurses, and nursing organizations and magazines.
