How transportation built a unified market in early America
This book examines how roads, rivers, steamboats, and railways together connected distant communities into one national economy. It traces how inland movement, river navigation, and later rail lines spurred growth from Ohio to New Orleans and beyond.
From colonial days to the Civil War, the narrative shows how transportation limits shaped trade, how Western farmers found markets, and how cities along the Mississippi became hubs of exchange. It also covers the rise of the cotton economy, the expansion of live stock and slave trade, and the shift from water routes to rail and inland canals as the nation grew.- See how early roads, river routes, and later steamboats and railways created new markets and regional interdependence.
- Learn about key turning points, such as the opening of the Mississippi, the rise of New Orleans as a trade center, and the spread of cotton culture.
- Understand the evolution of commerce from local exchanges to a coordinated national system, including the role of government and private enterprise.
- Explore the growth of manufacturing, iron and steel, lumber, and other industries that shaped internal trade.
