Book 1 of the Mage and Blade Trilogy
Chloe is prophesied to be a great hero...someday, when she reaches the grown-up age of ten or eleven, probably.
When a mysterious wizard enters the village, Chloe and her best friend, Thomas, find a way to learn everything he knows about the Outlands and monsters and being a hero.
Now, if she can only complete her training before the first monster arrives!
Since the day she was born, Chloe has known her destiny! But it's hard to be a warrior in a sleepy little village where nothing ever happens.
Then a magical stranger comes over the bridge from the mysterious Outlands. What is a wizard doing in Schlafendorf? Chloe's best friend, Thomas vows to discover his secrets.
Of course, the village isn't exactly the retirement resort the wizard was expecting. Between a nosy boy, a magic cat, and a snarky witch, it's all he can do to avoid answering questions about his past. The last thing he wants to do is to teach school!
Meanwhile, Chloe is learning there is more to being a hero than armor and a sword (and where is she supposed to get those anyway?) Will she be ready when the time comes to face dragon fire?
Praise for Out of the Outlands:
"...the cast is well rounded and compelling.
"An often charming middle-grade adventure story with an intriguing angle." --Kirkus Reviews
