First edition, first printing of William Sydney Thayer's collection of essays, addresses, and reminiscences concerning Sir William Osler and the practice and teaching of medicine. Thayer was closely associated with Osler during the formative years of the Johns Hopkins medical service, serving as Osler's senior resident and later succeeding him as Chief of Medicine at Johns Hopkins. The volume therefore provides an unusually personal perspective on Osler as physician, teacher, colleague, and central figure in the development of modern American clinical medicine. The collection includes such pieces as “Osler the Teacher,” “Osler,” and “Reminiscences of Osler in the Early Baltimore Days,” together with additional papers reflecting Thayer's interests in clinical medicine, medical education, diagnosis, and the traditions of the medical profession. Condition: Good+. Original dark cloth boards remain sound with gilt Johns Hopkins device to front board and gilt spine lettering still clearly legible. Boards show moderate rubbing and surface wear, with wear and fraying at the spine ends and corners, particularly at the upper extremities. Binding remains firm. Page edges and interior show expected age toning. Previous owner's ink signature dated 1932 on the front free endpaper. No other significant markings observed in the pages examined. No dust jacket present. Significance / Collector Appeal: A desirable association with the early Johns Hopkins school of medicine and one of the more personal contemporary volumes devoted to William Osler. Thayer's close professional relationship with Osler gives the reminiscences particular historical value. Of interest to collectors of Osleriana, Johns Hopkins medicine, medical biography, medical education, clinical medicine, and the history of American medicine. Shipping / Returns: Carefully packed for secure shipment. Domestic and international shipping available. Additional postage may be required due to weight. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks policies. SCI 3a.…
