This series of lectures presented at the University of Bucharest ably describe the defining epoch in relations between Western and Eastern Churches, from a traditionalist Orthodox perspective. Within the limits the author set for himself, these lectures still range widely to draw into the discussion issues of strengths and shortcomings of Western historiography (both Orthodox and non-Orthodox) and an examination of underlying sources of schism. Though openly depending largely on secondary sources, Chrysostomos weaves the material together skillfully, and his recognition of the complexities of history keeps the discussion from degenerating into facile apologetic and polemic. 239 pp.
