Print on Demand. This book takes on the weighty question of government, outlining its proper functions and limits. The author argues that justice as between man and man arises from human conduct and proceeds to explore how government should be organised, sustained, and exercised. The functions of government are thoroughly examined, identifying those actions it may and may not justly undertake. This book delves into the relationship between corporations and trusts and also offers suggestions for solving pressing governance issues of the day. Ultimately, it concludes that the only conception of justice with which the state is concerned is that which arises from consideration of man's conduct toward man and that a government's legitimacy hinges on its ability to act justly toward the governed. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Political Theory and History
Whosoever, therefore, out of a state of na ture unite into a community, must be understood to give up all the power necessary to the ends for which they unite into society to the majority of the community, unless they expressly agreed on any number greater than the majority. And this is done by barely agreeing to unite into one poli tical society, which is all the compact that is or needs be between the individuals that enter into or make up a commonwealth. And thus that which begins and actually constitutes any political society is nothing but the consent of any number of freemen, capable of majority, to unite and in corporate into such society. And thus that, and that only, which did or could give beginning to any lawful government in the world.
He also held that a man's tacit consent to an established government was to be inferred from the mere fact of his being within its dominions.
