Hardcover in publisher's dark red/maroon buckram, elaborately blocked in gilt with a design by Neil Gower; gilt-decorated spine; metallic red endpapers; housed in the original matching slipcase. Introduction by Jeanette Winterson. Typeset in Adobe Caslon and printed on Abbey Wove paper by L.E.G.O. S.p.A., Vicenza, Italy. Illustrated with 8 colour plates, including portraits and images associated with the original 1928 edition. A handsome Folio Society production of Woolf's celebrated mock-biography and literary fantasy. CONDITION: Fine book in near fine slipcase. Binding square, tight and clean; gilt bright; pages fresh and unmarked; no ownership inscription. Slipcase sound and attractive, with very light rubbing. An excellent copy. BRIEF BACKGROUND: First published in 1928, Orlando is one of Virginia Woolf's most imaginative and playful works. The novel follows Orlando across several centuries of English history, moving between biography, satire, fantasy, literary history, and reflections on gender and identity. Britannica describes it as a fanciful biographical novel paying homage to the family of Woolf's friend Vita Sackville-West. Woolf, one of the central modernist writers of the twentieth century, is best known for works such as Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, Orlando, The Waves, and A Room of One's Own.…
