About this Item
Personal photograph, oblong 2.75 x 4.5". Removed from a photo album, light creasing and scratches, glue stains on reverse else good. The location of the brewery is not listed but research and a similar online photo confirm. Shown are an older woman and her daughters(?) wearing fur coats standing on a light layer of snow, a 1920s(?) Buick off to the side, painted on the brick wall: "British American Brewery Ale Cellars" and on another section of the wall, lettering mostly obscured "ewing ore" which actually reads "British American Brewing Co. Retail Store". The brewery was opened in 1882 by Louis Greisinger, Jr. His father, Louis Sr., was a well-known Detroit architect who designed several breweries including Stroh's and Voigt. The brewery first started out of a house along the Windsor side of the Detroit River, a larger structure was built in 1885 which, of course, was designed by his father. In 1892 the brewery took on a partner, Albert Irion, who gained more control upon the unfortunate death of Louis Jr. in 1902. The brewery managed to survive Prohibition by created a 2.5% beer for local purchase and a stronger one for export and stayed in business under different names until 1969. The British American Brewery was Windsor's oldest continuously operating brewery. Memorabilia of any kind is extremely SCARCE. Seller Inventory # 21-5310
