Reception centre details include opening times, admission charges, disabled access, information on tastings and other attractions. Tasting notes, colour labels and vintage bottling lists are also provided.

The author does not simply sip, sell and scribe--he even acts as a consultant to a number of distilleries and his is considered to be one of the world's most respected whisky connoisseurs. From household names like Glenfiddich to the more obscure (and unpronounceable unless you've had a dram or two) An Cnoc, the seventh edition of this pocketbook lists every Malt available in Scotland and Northern Ireland. There are delightful, concise tasting notes; colour pictures of the labels to look out for; details of visitor centres (which now attract tens of thousands of visitors each year), and listings of specialist retailers. If you get your Highlands confused with your Lowlands; you want to find that Malt with "fresh, clean, sherry overtones with hints of walnut"; or you fancy a £1,600 bottle of 1946 Macallan, travelling with Wallace is recommended. --Nick Tarayan
