From the 1910s to the 1920s, Tarkington was considered one of the foremost authors in the United States. Tarkington also served one term in the Indiana House of Representatives. Penrod and Sam was originally published in 1916 as a sequel to Tarkington's first book in the trilogy, Penrod. The last book of the trilogy is Penrod Jashber. The Penrod trilogy bears some resemblance to Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in that the books are coming-of-age novels that follow the misadventures of the titular character, Penrod Schofield.
