Fabrizio Serra, 2017, pp. 176 -- Under the name oratio obliqua historical and descriptive grammars of Latin traditionally refer to strategies of reported speech typical of this language. However reported speech is universally known and each language applies different strategies depending on message content and its purposes, attitudes of the speaker, contexts and text genres. Among the world's languages Latin features reported speech by means of very distinct morpho syntactic structures, that deserve special attention in the perspectives of both text interpretation and synchronic and diachronic variation of linguistic patterns in relation to critical verbal categories such as tempus and modus. Particularly in Latin, reported speech is relevant also to legal texts known through both literary and epigraphic sources, so that their strategies are of special interest from the perspective of the rise and development of Roman law and legal style as well. This volume results from a workshop devoted to this topic, that was held on the occasion of the XVIIth Conference of Latin Linguistics (Rome, 2013 20th 25th May). For this reason most of the contributions to this volume focus on different aspects of reported speech in Latin in its evolution up until late antiquity. Nevertheless insights into other languages stimulate and help to enlarge the perspective. (From Foreword) Sotto il nome di oratio obliqua i testi latini di grammatica storici e descrittivi si riferiscono tradizionalmente alle strategie del discorso riportato tipiche di questo linguaggio. Tuttavia il discorso riportato è universalmente conosciuto, e ogni lingua applica strategie diverse a seconda del contenuto del messaggio e delle sue finalità, dell'atteggiamento di chi parla, dei contesti e dei generi testuali. Tra le lingue del mondo, il latino presenta il discorso riportato per mezzo di strutture morfo sintattiche ben distinte, che meritano una particolare attenzione nella prospettiva sia di interpretazione del testo sia di variazione sincronica e diacronica dei modelli linguistici in relazione a categorie verbali critiche come il tempus e il modus. In particolare, in latino il discorso riportato è rilevante anche per quanto riguarda i testi giuridici, noti sia attraverso le fonti letterarie che epigrafiche, dato che le loro strategie sono di particolare interesse dal punto di vista della nascita e dello sviluppo del diritto romano e dello stile legale. Il volume presenta i risultati di un workshop dedicato a questo argomento, tenuto in occasione della XVII Conferenza sulla linguistica latina (Roma, 2013, 20 25 maggio). Per questo motivo la maggior parte dei contributi si concentra su diversi aspetti del discorso riportato in latino, nella sua evoluzione fino alla tarda antichità.
