This reprint of the original book tells how David Kindersley started his work on spacing in the 1950s. It shows how he worked towards a system that automatically finds the right spacing by using a formula. He explain what the parameters would be and what needs to be considered. It is only now (over six years after his death) that technology has caught up with his invention. A new introduction by Francis Cave (who worked closely with David) will encourage the world to re-evaluate this system, getting it properly programmed and used. In particular, type designers can use David Kindersley's method of spacing as part of the design instead of seeing it as a separate process.
