A fine example of a 1544 Paris edition of Opera by Trebellius Pollio and others, notable for its elegant typographic design and sophisticated binding. The volume features capital spaces with guide letters and is ruled in red, with the printer?s device on the title page and a blindstamp on both the title and final leaves, indicating its high-quality production standards.
The contemporary French calf binding displays a two-line gilt border on the covers, with a dark-stained inner border enclosing a centrally tooled gilt panel featuring a dark stain in the decoration, exemplifying the refinement of Parisian craftsmanship. The binding has been sympathetically rebacked by a skilled conservator, ensuring its longevity while maintaining visual integrity. The signature of the renowned Wotton Binder ?B? has been identified on this binding, linking it to the celebrated workshop of Thomas Wotton, as documented in Foot Davis?s monograph (III, 42).
The volume?s pages are printed with a mixture of guide letters and ruled spaces, designed to assist in the clear reading and annotation of the text. The book?s condition benefits from careful preservation; the original printing and binding are in very good condition, with minor signs of age and expert restoration.
This edition is an example of the high-quality Renaissance printing produced by Robert Estienne, and its association with Wotton Binder ?B? adds considerable bibliographical interest, especially for specialists in Renaissance bookbinding.
